The book,"Planet Japan"
A fun, humorous, provocative and satirical comparison of American and Japanese culture.

It consists of 24 stream of conscious letter type essays written during James Rosen's tenure as an English teacher in rural Japan in 2002.

Rosen goes from being totally distraught on this planet he calls Japan to falling in love with the culture, food and people.

Bowing not handshakes or hugs provided a more hygienic way to greet a person. People consumed raw fish and cooked their vegetables, answered yes when they meant no, no when they meant yes and maybe when they meant never. The emergency phone number is 119, not 911. Japan is opposite land, another planet.

Rosen is a professional photographer and former publisher of Alaska People magazine. He's been published numerous times as a photographer. During his tenure as a magazine publisher Rosen worked close with writers, editors, graphic artists and printers. Now he is trying his hand at writing.

The book features a photo section called, "Ishin Denshin" which means shared communication, no words. This section is the universal language page, no words just images.  To top things off Rosen photographed everything with Fuji disposable camera's demonstrating the theory, "it's not the tool but the carpenter."
Think composition, lighting and holding the camera steady and you can achieve professional results with disposable camera's.

Dr. Leon Janis-Anchorage, Alaska writes;
"Rosen is an Art Buchwald in the making. His letters re-awakened the sense of awe I had as a child reading about cultures other than my own. In a world that seemed much larger and mysterious than it does today.

He gets around, people love him for his sincerity and for his conviviality. He is always ready to help and this comes through."

"A must read book for anyone who has ever visited Japan, hopes to visit Japan or just needs a breath of fresh air and a smile."
